JW Marriott Hill Country SuiteEntering a hotel room for the first time is on my list of top 10 favorite things to do in the world. I get so unbelievably excited to walk through a new door. The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa suite includes a balcony overlooking the property, a couch, very comfortable bed and modern decor. Chips and salsa greeted us at the door, but we only had a few because we knew what awaited us – three tastings at onsite restaurants!

18 Oaks Duck Fat Fries

First stop, 18 Oaks, the resort’s steakhouse featuring steaks seared to order, seafood and poultry dishes and an extensive wine menu. During our tasting we enjoyed the seared gulf crab cakes with aioli, capers and parsley, thick slices of bacon topped with fresh blackberries, shrimp on skewers with tangy cocktail sauce and duck-fat french fries with parsley and parmesan. Ingredients from the 18 Oaks restaurant come from the resort’s 5,000-square-foot organic garden. The garden contains tomatoes, squash, beets, radishes, and several varieties of lettuce, peach trees, avocado trees, bay leaf trees, fig trees, lavender, basil, rosemary, chives, sage and numerous other herbs. You could taste the freshness in every bite.

JW Marriott High Velocity Bar

Next up, the High Velocity Bar featuring a one-of-kind, 120-foot video wall broadcasting all your favorite sports. There are 20 handmade local brews on tap, spicy chicken sliders and other delicious entrees to keep you entertained while you watch the game. If you’re looking for a more intimate setup, High Velocity houses booths with private TV screens so you can watch exactly what you want with who you want.

Cibolo Moon, the resort’s premier restaurant, incorporates authentic flavors from Mexico, Germany, Creole Louisiana, and Texas. Cibolo Moon specializes in tequila and features 75 varieties and 10 infusions. After our tequila tasting – complete with a jalapeno, strawberry and lemon skewer – we enjoyed the chicken enchilada stack with an organic salad followed by chocolate, banana and passion fruit cake. The combination of dark chocolate with fruit was the perfect ending to our culinary adventure.

Before we headed up to our room to relax on the balcony overlooking the resort, Jacqueline and I couldn’t resist stopping by the 26,000 foot Lantana Spa complete with 30 treatment rooms, three couples suites, a fitness center and a movement studio with yoga and group exercise classes daily. The smell of fresh lavender calmed our body and soul as we walked through the spa.
