Last week I came across a true hidden gem. While enjoy coffee at Bakery Lorraine in Medical Center I was hit with an intense craving for something dangerously sweet. One would think – “why, you’re at Bakery Lorraine! So many delicious treats to choose from!” Well, my dear friend, I have recently began the transition to becoming 100% vegan which means my dessert choices are limited. Thankfully San Antonio has an entire community of vegetarian and vegan restaurants and specialty shops. After googling for vegan desserts in my area, I came across Powerhouse Bakery and their vegan cakes and cinnamon roll.

powerhouse-bakery-4Powerhouse Bakery, located off Huebner at 4902 Golden Quail, is a dedicated gluten-free bakery specializing in baked goods, specialty cakes (Powerhouse offers gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and vegan options for special order cakes), and healthy, prepackaged meals. I had the pleasure of sitting down with founder and CEO of Powerhouse Bakery – Suzanne Parker – an inspiring woman who is also a registered dietitian and personal trainer. Along with running the bakery, Suzanne designs all of Powerhouse’s recipes to showcase the healthiest gluten free, non-GMO & organic ingredients.

When Suzanne brought out the menu, I was excited to see what health conscious options I had. While Powerhouse Bakery is not a traditional table service restaurant, you can order and eat at the bakery. The first item that caught my eyes on the menu were pancakes – peanut butter and banana protein pancakes to be exact. The pancakes come with a fresh fruit, Greek yogurt and organic maple syrup.

After finishing off the protein pancakes, my next dish came out (yup, I ordered two!). I had never ordered a beet and lentil burger before but it came with sweet potato fries and a kale salad and those are two of my favorite things. When my plate was set down in front of me, I was in awe of the gorgeous dark plum color. The burger had a lemony flavor mixed in with fresh herbs and I immediately had to put it in the to go box for lunch later or I would devour the entire burger.

Powerhouse Bakery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
